Building A Strong & Authentic Network

This week, I was engaged in a very meaningful conversation with a colleague about the importance of having a strong & authentic network.

I truly believe that these genuine networks are among the greatest investments we can make in our careers - and in our lives.

Throughout my 35+ years leading globally, I’ve learned that your network isn’t measured by the number of connections you have. It’s measured by the trust you’ve built, the value you’ve given, and the authentic relationships you’ve cultivated over time.

Recently, at our leadership forum in San Francisco, I experienced a powerful reminder of this. I made eight phone calls to respected leaders I’ve had the privilege of knowing (four of them for 30 years!), working alongside and working for over the years within life sciences & technology, to invite them to speak and/or be on panels. Every one of them said ‘yes’. They rearranged schedules, boarded flights, and joined our leadership meeting to generously share their experiences, lessons, and wisdom with our employees.

That wasn’t about networking. It was about relationships.

I have learned that the strongest professional networks are built long before you need them. They are developed through authenticity, mutual respect, consistency, and a sincere desire to help others succeed. They are nurtured by staying connected, celebrating successes, offering support during challenges, and showing up -- especially when there’s nothing to gain.

A few principles I’ve found invaluable:
~ Be authentic.
~ Invest in people before you need them.
~ Be generous with your own time, knowledge, and encouragement with others.
~ Follow through on your commitments.
~ Stay connected, not just when opportunities arise.
~ It’s not all about ‘work’ - it’s about celebrating life together and being in each others’ lives.
~ Express gratitude often.
~ Build relationships based on trust, not transactions.
~ Never forget where you came from.
~ And….titles never mattered.

Leadership is never a solo journey. None of us achieves success alone. The people who challenge us, encourage us, open doors for us, and stand beside us throughout our careers become some of our greatest assets - and often our closest friends.

To the remarkable leaders who recently traveled to share their insights…thank you once again. Your willingness to invest in developing others is a testament to the power of authentic leadership and meaningful relationships.

My message is simple…build your network…and do it authentically. Nurture these relationships. Give more than you take. One day, you’ll discover that the relationships you’ve invested in become one of the most rewarding legacies of your career.
